I wanted to purchase an tv that didn’t break the bank, but met my criteria of

40-42″, multiple HDMI input, PC input, 1080p, 120hz and this fit the bill. I stayed away from plasma because to me the LCD picture quality is much crisper and I stayed away from LED because for the same sized LCD I can get a bigger screen.

Note: The room that this tv resides in is 11′ by 15′ and it sits 8′ away from the couch. The size is just right for the room.

Initial Setup

Setup was very easy and I was up and running within minutes of taking the tv out of the box. I had to install the included stand and then set a couple of options and the date once the unit was powered on. The stand base is made out of plastic but is connected to the tv with a metal bracket. That said, when we first set the tv on the console it wobbled and I was concerned at first, but after a few days, I already forgot that it initially wobbled, so this was a non-issue. The unit itself is beautiful with a black plastic frame with a glossy finish. It should be noted that the tv monitor itself sits very low with the stand, once installed, there is a 1.5″ clearance from whatever the tv is sitting on and the bottom of the monitor itself, there is no way to adjust the height.

Remote Control

The remote control is standard, nothing fancy. I like the over-sized volume and channel buttons, very easy to find without looking at the remote.

Sound

Please keep in mind my room size above. The sound from the speakers are very good. Volume ranges from 0 to 100. When I want to immerse myself in a movie, I set the volume at 45, otherwise I set the volume between 25 and 30. Just don’t expect surround sound from them and you won’t be disappointed.

Presets

There are 5 presets in the Picture Menu: Standard, Cinema, Game, Custom and Vivid. I wasn’t a fan with the Standard, Game and Cinema presets. After playing around with the settings, I settled on a Custom preset I liked.

Picture Quality

I have my PS3 connected via HDMI and watching 1080p movies on this tv is stunning. I watched Pixar’s UP on blu-ray and the quality is surreal, it’s so life-like that it almost looks 3D, I noticed myself paying attention to little details in the movie that I never saw before. Even watching non-1080p video is great, 120hz just makes everything smooth. I also have my Roku connected via HDMI and streaming HD content is great, the only downside with HD is that when you watch non-HD content, it’s quite noticeable, but very much watchable on this tv.

Games

There is a Game preset and the tv states that this is optimized for gaming, however, I found that I preferred playing games on my Custom preset. I played FF XIII and Uncharted 2 and the quality is great. My guess is that the “optimized for gaming” is mainly for games FPS games, where every millisecond counts… but that’s just my guess.

Turning Off 120hz

A frequent complaint I’ve been reading regarding 120hz units is that it looks like a soap opera. I can confirm this initial impression, but you do get accustomed to it and I actually like it now. There is an Advanced picture option Motion Picture Pro 4 that can be set to Off, Weak or Strong. I like it, so I leave it on Strong.

Viera Tools

The remote control has a dedicated Viera Tools button and when pressed, it shows you 5 options: Viera Link, Slideshow, Viera Image Viewer, Game Mode and Eco. Here’s my thoughts on those options…

1. Viera Link: since I didn’t own any compatible products, I don’t have any feedback on this tool. I guess to me it’s useless.

2. Slideshow: the unit has an SD card slot, so you can load pictuers and run a slideshow. You can set the soundtrack of the slideshow to one of 5 music tracks built-in to the tv. Other slideshow options you can set are transition effect (11 types, including collage), photo effect (sepia and gray scale) and display interval. Display interval is the speed of the slideshow, it can be set to Fast, Normal, Slow, Very slow and Short. Setting this option to Short would transition the 9 MP photos I have on my SD card every 8 to 9 seconds, which seems like good performance for a tv.

3. Viera Image Viewer: this previews the photos in the SD card, which is pretty fast. You can sort by month, folder or date and then run the slide show based on the sort. Neat.

4. Game Mode: You can either choose Game or Standard. Selecting Game just sets the preset to Game. Unless it does something more then I’m not aware of it, then it seems useless.

5. Eco: You can set options for “No signal for 10 minutes” and “No activity for 3 hours”. Basically, you can set whether it stays on or turns off for those options.

Of the 5 tools above, it is the Slideshow that I found most…

Had it for about a week now. Excellent TV…..exceeded my expectations! The HD feeds from the networks are blowin’ my mind! Beautiful color and black levels. I’m a newbie there so keep that in mind but it looks great and can really mesmerize me. Before this, I bought a 1080p vizio 22″ LED for my bedroom…..thought that was great and that the larger screen would not hold up in comparison….but it’s so much better!!! And great fast service by Amazon!

Pros: Beautiful colors

Deep Blacks

Motion Pro works well

Even light across screen

Energy saver!!!

Just the right size for up to 10ft. Viewing

Great viewing angle

And of course, Blu Ray looks beautiful

Cons: Optical audio out only.

Other thoughts:

Motion Pro 4 : I think it works well. You can set it to strong, weak or off. On the strong setting, yes, some moments in film look like video….it’s not that it’s not pleasing, it’s more like it’s distracting at first because I keep noticing it. I turned it to strong for the Amazing Race the other nite and it worked well with all the action and camera cuts. For general viewing, I’ve settled in on the weak setting which is perfect for me.

Power Consumption: I’ve found by using a watt meter that the backlight is the main variable in using more or less power. Power consumption can easily be tuned down to as little as 50 or 60 watts….and a setting that uses the advertised 80 watts looks relatively good…..however, my favorite setting with the deepest blacks has the backlight pumped up and uses about 135 watts. I can compromise at 80 or 100 watt setting and pump it up when watching a movie or fav show.

A.I. picture: Enriches black areas without affecting brightness of overall picture…..I think it works well and I leave it on…..does not seem to affect power consumption

C.A.T.S. adjusts for ambient light….doesn’t do much during the day but at night, it significantly reduces brightness and I don’t like it so I leave it off…..does save some energy.

ECO mode: In Viera tools….standard looks better….saving is less bright but saves energy.

There’s other settings to play with.

My custom settings for average viewing that uses about 100 watts:

Having both sold and owned a multitude of electronic devices that included Sony, Panasonic and others too numerous to mention and I freely admit to being a Sony lover until this purchase. This set replaces a Sony rear projecting Sony flat screen that required a blub replacement, the cost of which was over 30 percent of what the new set cost me. After comparing the picture quality and features offered by various brands including LG, Sharp and Sony among them, I found Panasonic equaled or exceeded what the competition offered and till now I have no reason to regret my dissension to buy it.

That being said, I am very pleased with Amazon as a seller. Having been a retailer who considered service of prime importance, I hate Box Stores approach to merchandizing that relies on the Hard Sell by their employees and considers the obligation ceases once the item moves out the doorway and becomes the buyers responsibility should a problem surface. Not only did Amazon have my purchase delivered free to my living room in perfect condition, but also guaranteed a replacement should it be defective without the hassles one can expect when dealing with WalMart, Best Buy and others like them.

Would I recommend both the product and the seller? Yes!

I decided to upgrade the TV in my kitchen. Had been using a 13″ CRT but wanted a flat screen like the rest of the TVS in the house. Actually didn’t buy this from Amazon. Bought it locally because the price was the same and I could have it NOW! Another plus was that if I decided that I really didn’t like the TV or its sound I could easily and quickly return it. The only downside was state taxes. First off I should say I have no problem with the sound portion of this TV. A few other have commented on that but it plays and sounds just fine. I have a 7.1 surround sound hooked to my main television so I have a reference. No, I’m not even trying to compare the two but I am aware of sound quality. This is quite a bargain and the overall quality is more than satisfactory. I was a good choice for me and therefore I can recommend it.

Update: after listening to the sound produced by this TV for maybe a month or so, I decided to add a set of small speakers to it which has improved the sound quality dramatically. Though it was possible to listen to it originally, adding the speakers completely removed any sound issue.

Purchased this TV to replace a Samsung T260HD that has been great as a “hybrid” monitor. This TV was going to be used for 50/50 computer monitor & PS3 gaming for a child’s room. Unfortunately it’s come time to replace the T260HD due to a loose rear HDMI connector and just looking outdated compared to new models. There are not to many QUALITY choices on 1080P tv’s 26″ or smaller so I gave this 22″ a shot. First the TV aesthetics look great! Connections are good with side facing HDMI, but didn’t like the rear headphone jack since it’s frequently used. Another plus was NO “power brick”, usually small TV’s this thin have an external power converter. PQ was good for a screen this size, and surprising sound was decent too.

Unfortunately I had to return this tv because of the flimsy bezel that is around the screen. I had the tv wall mounted using an articulating mount. During gentle adjustments holding the top and bottom of the screen to adjust tilt, the top portion of the bezel would snap off. Being in a child’s room with daily adjustments, there is no way it would physically last. Looking at the bezel, it looks like it just uses snaps on the top and screws on the bottom.

So if you plan to use this tv on an articulating mount, I can’t recommend, but if you don’t it should make a great little tv.

I’ve only had this TV for three days and the poor sound quality is driving me crazy! No matter what setting it’s on (movie, music, clear voice, etc) it sounds horrible (like a harsh AM radio)! There is no bass whatsoever, the background noise is more pronounced than the dialog (even when the setting that enhances the dialog is on), and every “s” sounds scratchy, even when you turn the high frequencies all the way down with the useless equalizer. The TV has many innovative features like ConnectShare and an impressive HD picture, but the sound ruins everything. Samsung could have done better.

The little box is a heck of lot for under 0 – I do not think I could ever go back to methods that have worked before my TV. You can stream any flash based videos from any website, or use the app from the Android Market to expand to other things Pandora, Netflix – only they added armor Player support! You also have the ability to stream photos, music, and videos from any PC or Mac in your home. This box is amazing – worth twice the price.

If Logitech Revue lowered the price from 0 to 0 and then as a “refurb”, I was in. I loves me some tech.

Setup is as easy as can be. It is recognized by Tivo as video source. Met my model TV. Seem to be able to control my Tivo without the (supplied) IR followers. Nice.

Keyboard is comfortable.

The firmware / OS that came from (2.x) the unit is working, but hard to navigate. (I say this as someone that is designed interface and works with computers every day). Too many “why there here?” and “what it should do?”

The new update Gingerbread OS (3.x) is much better. Very streamlined and fairly obvious. It also combines the Android platform market, even as the app running on the platform that is already pathetically small. I went through the list and found nothing I would like to add …

it is lots of fun for.

For most people, the big pluses is the ability to browse Youtube and Netflix, and the ability to use the Google Chrome browser. And the ability to make small your current video stream (picture in picture) while you do it.

Downsides include the lack of useful apps on the market, the annoyances related to the Chrome browser (no tabbed browsing to the big one), and no native support for features like Amazon streaming video (which is, at present, accessed through the Chrome browser).

I would say the gingerbread update, it feels like a B-level products, ready to make it to the A-level in the next major update.

You see, Logitech has discontinued the product after losing around 0 million in fails to launch (built them a ton of them, hoping the huge sales they sold very few and obtained a large number of returns to the top that). They are done. They added that they were not getting back to the game of Google any time soon. So it is an orphan product.

This means that future updates to the OS in question. They may push Google around – and that’s not completely unrealistic. But you can be sure that happens. If not – if the current OS update last unit will ever see – then I would say it’s fun, and offers a lot for this price, but in some sense it is more tempting to important.

Logitech also the end of support means that third party vendors and content providers (like Amazon) are not going to have a whole lot of energy to create native apps for the platform. It’s not horrible using Chrome to access the Amazon streaming video, but it could be much nicer.

So where does that leave us? Suppose this is the end product, it is still a win for the gadget freaks, and for people who want to bring some Internet content on their TV (and not either a PC connected TV or have a high end smart TV functions). Integrating Web search on the source of the video is pretty swell (type “ABC” and your changes to the source of the video network ABC, or you can see a nice display of movies currently in – with picture of the “video box” and synopses – and the search is also interactive with your video source). But a hat Q / A or design experience, I would say that this product will meet the great, but not there yet. I see where the dots are, and how you want to connect them. But as an orphan product, they can not get connected. Your willingness to deal with that sort of thing should determine how happy you are with this iteration of the product.

If you read the 3 star product review, you might think twice. This individual actually sounds convincing. That is unless you’ve done your homework. I’d like to clarify a few incorrect points that have been made.

- Fast switching phosphors are used in all Full-HD VIERA models for 2011. By reformulating the phosphor materials, afterglow has been minimized and luminous efficiency has been increased. This enables crisp, clear rendering of motion images. A level of efficiency that exceeds our 2010 panels also increases picture quality while lowering power consumption.

Only the top of the line 2010 3D models (K) had the fast switching phospors. The neoplasma is literally a promotional “tag”. The 2011 3D TV’s have a different rib structure in the panel as needed for the seperation of 3D images, specific cross talk cancellation processors to minimize 3D double images, and a specific louvered filter (infinite black) to help keep glare down while keeping the two 3d images clear.

Panasonic streamline the production lines by sharing internal components for 2011.

Cost leader is the 2D 720 “X” model. High end 1080 2D is the 2D “S” model. The only 1080 3D line is the “ST” model. That’s it. It’s cost effective.

Note that “X” and “S” do not have the pro mode picture setup like the 3D models but don’t let that scare you. The 3D models need it to fine tune double imaging.

The 720 “x” model is a fine choice however you will notice a difference in edge glow with blueray IF you know what your looking for. Since most HD TV channels are 720, you’ll never know the difference. A lot of people read the old CNET report and live by it and a lot of it is valid. But a one size fits all review between 720 and 1080 is flawed. The old comparisons between LCD and plasma is no longer an issue as power consumption is now equal.

Panasonic plasma has always been choosen as best picture over Samsung and LG. Do your homework and make sure your looking at a review within the last two years. Panasonic wins period. Far more natural colors, especially over LED-LCD which makes movies look like they were filmed with video tapes.

I have no need for 3D as its not receiving the support expected. Soon 3D screens without glasses will be standard just like the new handheld games systems that have just been released. They just have to get past the headaches…

My old Panasonic was one of the first 1080s on the market and has been through 4 rough home moves and is still kicking strong. That earns a bit of brand loyalty from me.

I went with the “S”46 model for a very simple reason. 8 delivered.

Thinner, better design, better picture technology than the 2010 Panasonic models and 1080 for bluray. Lovin it.

The picture quality of this TV is simply excellent. Compared it with more expensive Panasonic “Infinite Black” G model and it’s impossible to see the difference in real video content. You need to be in total darkness and have very high quality, low noise signal with large swatches of black and put them side to side to notice a slightly darker black in G models. Of course, just watching TV you will never think I wish blacks were deeper.

I’ve watched HD programs over the air, from blu-ray, Netflix from Roku, and from PC over HDMI. All modes 480/720/1080 progressive and interlaced displayed perfectly, and TV did a good job upscaling lower resolution to native 1080. No problems with motion, no blurring, no color fading or runoffs. TV does have a slightly lower moving picture resolution 900 lines (vs 1080 lines in top models), but it’s quite impossible to notice that without measurements. So sports viewers will be satisfied. Also, on a positive side, the screen is not as glossy as the majority of other plasmas, so reflections are subdued.

I’ve been using this set for a few days now, so I can’t comment on “image retention” problems that previous generations had. Supposedly the phosphors used in this set are improved from previous year, and reportedly they last longer. Just be sure you turn on the “pixel orbiter” to avoid burning in the logos and avoid prolonged display of static images. You can also run “scrolling bar” once a day for 15 minutes for the first week to age the phosphors evenly. Not all plasma owners believe a break-in period is necessary for the later generations of plasma TVs, and no plasma manufacturers now suggest their sets require break-in.

The description Amazon (and it looks now they removed it) seemed to suggest that TV had a built-in Wi-Fi. It doesn’t, you need to buy a separate Wi-Fi USB adapter for that. Due to lack of adapter I cannot tell if IPTV and DLNA are working as expected. The other negative is common to all plasmas, which is high power consumption. You don’t find this information advertised anywhere, because this set is rated at a whopping 339W. The built-in audio is weak, it has two tiny 10W speakers. It’s fine for casual watching TV programs, but if you want to watch movies you probably want to invest in a separate audio system.

This TV may lack all the bells and features you can find in more advanced models, but it does deliver an excellent picture at a very reasonable price and that what matters most.

Edit 5-8-2011. I installed USB Wi-Fi adapter (Netgear N600) to test the Viera Tools. I didn’t find them very useful though. It has Netflix client, but picture quality is poor (compared to Roku on the same network). Then there is CinemaNow, which I never used. Amazon Video on demand looks OK. I don’t have any use for Pandora, Napster, or Facebook, so I can’t comment. There is also Media Player for SD and USB cards, works pretty well. I popped in an SD card from Panasonic camcorder and picture was pretty good, no conversion was necessary. And finally, there is DLNA client, which I couldn’t make to work. I does find the DLNA server, but connection always fails.

I am the ecstatic owner of a Panasonic TC-L32X2 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with iPod Dock, so when it came time to move up to a 42″ set for the living room (and move the 32″ to the bedroom to replace the 27″ tube TV), I mostly confined my search to Panasonic. I had considered the previous version of this unit because it was highly rated on Amazon, as well as slightly less expensive, but I decided to take a chance on the newer model–even though it’s so new that it has no ratings or reviews. (As of 3/27/11, however, this unit is less expensive.)

I ordered this TV on a Saturday and received it via delivery truck on Wednesday. Setup was painless (it is pretty heavy, though). I was pleasantly surprised to see that it supports Internet connectivity (although it wasn’t something I was looking for, the concept has really grown on me), but less pleasantly surprised to learn that the wireless dongle (Panasonic DY-WL10 Wireless LAN Adapter for select Panasonic Viera HDTVs and Blu-Ray Disc Players) is another . For that much, I think I’ll run a LAN cable. [I did; see below. Also see the comments for another wireless alternative.] I’m using the three HDMI ports for my Verizon FIOS set top box, Apple TV 2, and JVC XVBP11 Blu-ray Player. A set of RCA audio/video inputs takes care of my Pioneer laserdisc player. (Yeah, I’m old school.) I don’t foresee using the SD card slot for anything but firmware updates, but I like having USB ports so we can watch our Flip movies in full HD glory–once I learn how to do it, that is.

I was very happy with my LCD TV even in the middle of the day; maybe that’s why I never realized just how bright our living room is. The first time I tried to watch this TV from the couch, the reflection from the skylight was terrible. Around noon, the glare was nearly unbearable.

In late afternoon/full dark, this TV looks fantastic. It’s so good, in fact, that I couldn’t tear myself away from 2 Fast 2 Furious, which says a lot. The problem is that I do most of my viewing during the day, so I’m not sure that it’s going to work for me in the long run. I’ll have to give it a few more days. The preset color modes aren’t perfect, but they’re fairly accurate right out of the box. Both Netflix and iTunes movies streamed over the Apple TV look great. When I have some time I’ll run Video Essentials to get the levels dialed in.

The speakers are adequate at low volumes, and there are separate bass and treble adjustments, but at normal volumes, certain low frequencies rattle the cabinet. It was particularly bad while I was watching Inception, but my wife even noticed it during “Top Chef.” I know I’ll eventually have to upgrade my 15-year-old Sony receiver (it has only RCA input, and the TV has only digital audio output), but it’s a little irritating that I have to do it just to watch TV without annoying rattles. If the sound quality were better, I would be happy to give this TV a full 5-star rating. (If it were just about the picture, I would.) Additionally, I need to jack up the volume when I use my Blu-ray player–a problem I also have with my 32″ TV. I suspect that the player’s audio output level is lower than the DVR and Apple TV. NOTE: After the first few days of viewing, the rattles disappeared. Also, I wired up the DVR box and the BD player to the receiver, so I have big sound when I want it (unless I’m using the ATV).

Bought this TV without prior viewing it in a store. TV has a very nice picture at all angles, we placed it in our kitchen under the cabinet and it it looks great, the slim design is perfect. Sound is very good. We had to replace a COBY brand 15″ TV that was struck by lightning, what a great upgrade. I don’t have anything negative to say.

I’m a Samsung fan but very disappointed with this device. The picture is great. 720p on a small screen looks like true HD. But, we can’t get past the terrible audio. As a thin flat panel TV, the speakers are very small and fire down from the bottom of the TV. There are no lower frequencies to speak of because of the nanometer sized speakers, regardless of the sound mode selected or the equalizer settings. So the sound is very brassy. Using the stand and sitting the TV on a hard surface, makes the high frequencies so brassy, the set is practically unlistenable. We have the set sitting on a towel – which helps a little. But we’re very disappointed. We’re looking at using a small sound bar but we’re saddened at the idea that we have to go to this additional expense to compensate for this deficiency. If you’re planning to simply use this TV for video and using another method for audio, the set is a great buy and I’d recommend it. If you’re planning to use the TV’s speakers for audio, I suggest you look elsewhere.

The other reviewers are saying that the sound is terrible on this unit. They are correct, but their suggested solutions of using external speakers are not possible. Despite the technical spec on Amazon showing “1 digital output” in fact there are no audio outputs at all, not even a headphone jack! I just confirmed this with Samsung. The support guy apologized for the total lack of audio outputs. I’ll be sending this one back, extremely rare for me!
